Nursing Faculty Loan Repayment Assistance Program

The purpose of the Nursing Faculty Loan Repayment Assistance Program is to improve access to nursing education programs by encouraging qualified nurses to serve as faculty at eligible institutions of higher education.

How To Apply?

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is pleased to announce that the 2024-2025 application for the Nursing Faculty Loan Repayment Assistance Program is now available. Your application must be submitted by August 31, 2025

To complete an application: 

  1. Create a CBPASS account at https://www1.highered.texas.gov/cbpass/
  2. Click on the Create one now! hyperlink and complete the “New User Registration”. 

After your CBPass account is created, login and complete the following:  

  1. Click on the My Access tab. 
  2. Click on the Click to Request Access to another application hyperlink and select “Loan Repayment Programs” from the list of applications. 
  3. In the Loan Repayment Programs portal, select “Nursing Faculty Loan Repayment Assistance Program“. 

Eligibility Requirements

To receive loan repayment assistance, an applicant must

  • Hold a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing.
  • Be licensed by the Texas Board of Nursing for the state of Texas.
  • Apply by the application deadline.
  • Be employed part time or full time as a faculty member in a nursing program at a Texas institution of higher education or private or independent institution in a position requiring an advanced degree in professional nursing.
    • Eligible employment must have been held within the past year at the time of applying for loan repayment assistance and must be currently held when applying.

Assistance Amount

  • A nurse’s annual loan repayment assistance must not exceed:
    • The maximum annual loan repayment assistance amount, as determined by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (Coordinating Board), which will be announced after the review of applications has begun.
    • Twenty percent of their total education loan balance.
  • A part-time nurse receiving loan repayment assistance must be prorated. The prorated amount is calculated based on the proportion of hours worked by the nurse in comparison to average hours worked by full-time employees.
  • If the loan repayment assistance does not cover the full amount owed, the nurse is responsible for the remaining loan balance. 
  • A nurse may qualify for education loan repayment assistance for a maximum of five service periods. 
  • Loan repayment assistance is reported to the Internal Revenue Service by the Coordinating Board.
     

Eligible Loans

Loans eligible for repayment through this program must:

  • Be evidenced by a promissory note that required the loan proceeds to be used to pay for the cost of attendance for the undergraduate or graduate education of the nurse applying for repayment assistance.
  • Not be in default at the time of application.
  • Not have an existing obligation to provide service for loan forgiveness through another state program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full-time employment is an average of at least 32 hours per week during the service period at an eligible institution.

Part-time employment is less than an average of 32 hours per week during the service period at an eligible institution. If deemed eligible, a part-time nurse will receive a prorated amount of loan assistance.

A service period is a minimum of nine months of eligible employment of a 12-month academic year.

No. The PSLF program requires a person to make 120 payments before the loan is potentially forgiven. The verification process does not take place until all 120 payments have been made. However, a participant may complete the Nursing Faculty Loan Repayment Assistance Program before all 120 payments have been made on their federal loans.

Your annual loan repayment assistance payment will be mailed to the lender after you have completed a year of service and all required documentation has been received and approved. We cannot send payments electronically or via ACH, so please allow time for the check to be mailed and processed by your lender.
