Math and Science Scholars Loan Repayment Assistance

Math and Science Scholars loan repayment assistance aims to strengthen math and science education in Texas public schools by encouraging high-achieving math and science graduates to teach those subjects in K–12 classrooms.

How to Apply

The deadline to apply is July 31, 2026. Employer verification is required within 60 days of the application submission date.

What you’ll need to apply:

  • An unofficial or official transcript from the institution from which you graduated
  • A student loan billing statement showing eligible debt, including account holder name, account number, and loan servicer’s name
  • The name and email address of your campus chief administrative officer (CAO), such as a principal, assistant principal, superintendent, or a human resource representative authorized to certify your employment

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for assistance, you must:

  • Submit a complete application, including postsecondary education transcripts and any other requested documents, by the deadline.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Have completed an undergraduate or graduate program in mathematics or science (see Eligible Programs Listing).
  • Have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a four-point scale or the equivalent at the institution from which you graduated.
  • Be certified under the Texas Education Code, Title 2, Chapter 21 to teach mathematics or science in a Texas public school, or be teaching under a probationary certificate.
  • Be currently employed, and have been employed for one service period1 during the last year, as a full-time classroom teacher2 teaching mathematics or science in a public school.
    • If you first established eligibility for Math and Science Scholars loan repayment assistance prior to September 1, 2023, you must teach at a Texas public school that receives federal funding under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 during your first four years of receiving repayment assistance.

1 A service period is a minimum of nine months of eligible employment in a 12-month academic year.

2 A full-time classroom teacher must teach a minimum of four hours a day in an eligible subject.

Assistance Amount

Each year, your repayment assistance is equal to the maximum annual assistance amount, except that you may not receive repayment assistance in excess of your eligible loan debt.

Funding levels have been adjusted for the 2025-2026 application cycle. The updated annual maximums help ensure continued support for a broad number of teachers and sustain long-term investment in the state’s educator workforce.

Maximum Annual Assistance Amount for 2025-2026: $10,000

  • You may qualify for loan repayment assistance for a maximum of eight years.
  • If the loan repayment assistance does not cover the full amount owed, you are responsible for the remaining loan balance.
  • If you first established eligibility for the loan repayment assistance prior to September 1, 2023, and transfer to a non-Title I Texas public school after completing four consecutive years at a Title I school, the annual award amount is reduced to 75% of the amount established for the fiscal year.
  • Loan repayment assistance is reported to the Internal Revenue Service by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (Coordinating Board).

Eligible Loans

To be eligible for repayment, your loans must:

  • Be evidenced by a promissory note that required you to use the loan proceeds to pay for the cost of attendance for your undergraduate, graduate, or professional education.
  • Not cover costs incurred after you completed your graduate or professional education.
  • Not be in default at the time you apply.
  • Not have an existing obligation to provide service for loan forgiveness through another program.
  • Not be subject to repayment through another student loan repayment assistance or loan forgiveness program, or through repayment assistance provided by your employer while receiving Math and Science loan repayment assistance.

Note: Participation in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program does not affect eligibility for Math and Science Scholars loan repayment assistance. PSLF requires 120 qualifying payments before loan forgiveness is considered, and verification occurs after those payments are completed. You may still receive loan repayment assistance before completing all 120 payments on your federal loans.

What to Expect After Applying

Your application will remain in a pending status until the Coordinating Board receives verification of your service from your CAO. Applications are processed in the order in which service verifications are received; however, priority is given to prior recipients over new applicants.

If additional information is needed, you will be contacted by email using the address provided on your application. If approved, the Coordinating Board will mail a paper check directly to your lender and notify you by mail. If your application is not approved, you will be notified by email and may reapply in future years.

Note: The Coordinating Board cannot send payments electronically or by Automated Clearing House (ACH).
