Border County Doctoral Faculty Education Loan Repayment Program

The purpose of the Border County Doctoral Faculty Education Loan Repayment Program is to recruit and retain persons holding a doctoral degree to become or remain full-time faculty with instructional duties at Texas institutions of higher education located in counties that border Mexico.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible applicants must

  • have received a doctoral degree on or after Sept. 1, 1994 from a Texas institution of higher education as defined in Section 61.003 of the Texas Education Code, or from an out-of-state institution that is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency;
  • be employed full-time as a doctoral faculty member with instructional duties at an eligible institution of higher education located in a Texas county that borders Mexico; and
  • work full-time as doctoral faculty with instructional duties in the approved institution for one full academic year.

Service Period

The year of service begins on Sept. 1 and ends on May 31.

Loan Repayment Awards

  • The maximum annual loan repayment award is $5,000
  • The maximum number of years a person may be eligible to receive loan repayment is 10 years
  • Loan repayment awards are reported to the Internal Revenue Service by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

Eligible Loans

Eligible loans must

  • have been obtained for undergraduate or graduate education at a Texas institution of higher education as defined in Section 61.003 of the Texas Education Code, or at an out-of-state institution that is accredited by a recognized accrediting agency;
  • not be in default at the time the application is received and may not entail a service obligation.

In March of each year, applications are provided to the institutions named above. The presidents of the institutions or their designees determine which eligible faculty members may apply for loan repayment. Priority must be given to renewal applicants.
